OUGD 504 - Design for print

I cut these top to images on the laser cutter, I used the raster feature to cut from a photo which I felt gave a really interesting look too it, because the laser cut into the paper depending on darker or lighter tones it gave the image an almost 3d effect to it.
The second image was just cut using the cut through feature and I quite like the over all look too it, I want to use a variation of the Marilyn Monroe image though because I really feel it shows the potential of what a laser cutter can do, its amazing the accuracy it can generate to only cut part way through a sheet of paper

This was just a first mock up of the packaging I want to fit my posters into

These three images were to represent the digital aspect of printing, i use the colours to represent cmyk

This was the final print for the screen printed aspect, I did over 30 prints some with a black wire overlay which I liked, i just felt without the black it looked better.

This was the lino printed image which I started cutting the wrong way so the letter when pressed would appear backwards, which I think actually works fine when you look at them in a series. For the final submission I didn't have time to re print this image because it takes around a week to dry and I didn't want it the mess up the other posters, so its incomplete.

These were the foiling posters I created, I tried one using the foil on the negative space, it worked to an extent but I think the fabric screen I used was just to old and didn't evenly let through the glue so the results were varied. I ended up using the much simpler print.

These were the inserts for the folded booklet I made, originally I had planned to print each individual image on the back of each insert but due to time constraints and other complications I just couldn't get it done in time.
There are a couple things in this project that I felt I left incomplete, I would have liked to re print the lino print and also put a banner along the bottom of the foiled print. I couldn't do this in time due to people in the print room stealing screens, Which is something that you really cant do anything about.
I would have also would have liked to printed on the back of the booklet inserts and also would have liked to print on the front cover of both booklet and packaging for the posters, due to time constraints I just couldn't get these done.

OUGD 504 - Design for web - Final outcome

Design for web although interesting I found it very frustrating, to the point where I didn't want to do any more to it because everything I did seemed to change something else. I wasn't particularly happy with the final outcome, I kind of liked how it looked but I didn't work very well as a website. I felt the sessions from Simon were useful but they weren't enough I though for me to competently build a website so I had to get some help else where.

My website basically stemmed from a series of crits where originally I didn't have much of an idea what the purpose of my site would be, I was just going off the back of my summer project research which was about the paper artist Li Hongbo. After talking to various people and getting different opinions I came up with an idea for a site which would display various different paper artists in an interactive and engaging way, it would be where people could go to get info on these sorts of things because I found there wasn't really one single site dedicated to categorising this sort of thing.

After a bit of research I started to plan out my site in wireframes in a very rough sense because of the way I was doing it seeing it on screen might change how I view it as the site was in a structured grid layout in that sort of sense.

The creased paper image was something I got off the internet and altered the colour of itto add a background to my site just to give it some more depth.

For my site I need to take about 40 pictures of scrunched up paper balls that were to represent planets, I did this same process of cutting them out then slicing them and getting them ready for a internet page by changing the format and size.
Each image was a slightly different size so when viewed as a collection they would look a bit more dynamic and planet like.

I had to get some help arranging the planets in a way that when I added more they would just move about the place, this was where I was told how to use a z-index, this was a really useful feature that we weren't taught in the sessions that effectively created an image/link on a separate layer much like illustrator or photoshop. By doing this it just means that the last image wont be effected by adding other ones so you can create a more unstructured page without having to use a grid to lay it all out.

My homepage looked something along the lines of this, the spacing between the planets kept on changing as I couldn't get it to stay a constant for some reason. One thing I do regret not adding was a rollover text or even just a static text so the planets could be identifiable without clicking on them.

The navigation bar at the top of the page was intended to have a drop down menu for easy navigation throughout the whole site but I couldn't find any that worked with it, its a piece of advanced coding that i wasn't at all familiar with.

This was the page that if you clicked on one of the artists planets would bring you to, the main problem I had with this page was that I couldn't format all the pictures to the same size without squashing some of them, this was because they are all from the internet the didn't have any consistency through them. If I were able to take pictures of the art myself I think it would have been much easier.

I think overall in  this project I may have bitten off more than I can chew, i'm relatively pleased with the actual look of the planet layout it was pretty close to how I intended it to look like.  I feel with more time and more support on this project then I could have come up with a genuinely good and working website.

OUGD 504 - InDesign workshop

In this weeks session we were told to look at an indesign document and figure out what problems the document had, there were eight to find.

  • The background colour is not set to the same as the documents so the bleed wont work when it comes to printing.
  • The tree image is not linked to the file, when it comes to print the image wont be printed because the application wont be able to find the file.
  • There is an RGB colour mode in the document.
  • Extra unnecessary colours have been added of different shades.
  • The image is much smaller than the rest with a lower image resolution.
  • Third image of bird is in RGB colour mode.
  • Dimensions of the first bird are really large.
  • The type on the third page should be in black.
By using photoshop we could determine colour modes and resolution of pictures, we could also find information out about the images by using the links panel in indesign.

OUGD 504 - Design for print and web - research

In the first session we had for this we were told to look through the ISTD brief archive and choose 3 different briefs to bring in so we can dissect them and break them down into more manageable or relatable briefs. The briefs that caught my attention were -
100
Fakery
Not just fleurons

After reading through all or the briefs I decided to go with 100 as the basis of my brief. I felt the brief was very broad and didn't really have a specific outcome to it as I struggled initially to come up with any ideas for it. I started by listing all the things that were significant to the number 100 to see if any of these things would spark my imagination.
We were told in the session that we need to re-write our chosen brief to fit with a specific direction we wanted to take our work in, After struggling initially I decided that there wasn't a specified boundary we had to stay in when re-writing the brief so this open up a load of new options for me.
I decided I would push as far as I could in terms of re-writing a brief and so basically just used the tittle as a foundation for my new brief. I wanted to centre the brief around brand so I can up with the idea that I would be creating a new restaurant or bar that had to have some relevance to the number 100, whether that be in terms of number of smells, number of seats or if it were a bar number of beers or wines.

After doing some research and a brainstorm i decided to go with a sushi restaurant as what I would be branding for. The reason I chose to do sushi was because there are many different sushi dishes, over 100 and I find japanese branding really interesting, I think the japanese typography is really strong in terms of branding potential and also it looks really good. The basis around my sushi restaurant would be that we served 100 different sushi dishes and that would be how I would relate it back to the brief.

As it is with branding I first started to look into a logo because once you have this you can apply it to everything across the range. I first looked into words that you could interpret from 100, hecto, cent - per cent, benjamin franklin and so on. I then looked into the japanese work for 100 and how it was written, which was hayaku. I liked this word and stared to play around with it using it in terms of hayaku sushi, looking at it from a branding perspective. The more I looked into the japanese side of this project the more I discovered, I found that there was another word that is 100 that is kind of more along the lines of an older version of the word which is Momo, I felt this worked much better and though it sounded much more like a brand, I think this was a factor from building on the already successful sushi brand yo sushi.
I liked this name because it actually has a literal translation of 100 sushi or 100 dishes with rice. designing a logo wasn't particularly difficult as I didn't really do much development on it because I felt it was relevant and fitted with the branding. The logo was just basically the japanese symbol for 100.

This is similar the the logo I went with ^
I looked into detail into written japanese words and learnt how to write the ones that were relevant to my project. There is a set order to the strokes you do with japanese words so its a very structured written language.

This tally is just for when I was working out the different dishes based around what they contained ie, fish meat shell fish ect..

I started to look at the shop fronts and interiors for sushi restaurants, some of these influenced what I wanted my restaurant to look like in terms of choosing colours and logo styles.

For my research I started to look at some japanese influenced design I tried to get an idea of how they would usually structure their letter forms and type and what colours might typically be used.
As I was making branding for a restaurant I felt I needed to cover pretty much every aspect of my brand with a focus mainly on print rather than web.
I created a list of what I would intend to design -
Logo
Cups
plates
chopsticks
cutlary
menus
bags
takeaway box
uniform
business cards
interior design - bar, seating arrangment
napkins, coasters
advertising - billboards, posters
website
app
artwork for interior walls

I set a big list because I intended to do everything but I knew somethings may not be viable in the remaining time I had left.
