OUGD 504 - Design for print and web - research

In the first session we had for this we were told to look through the ISTD brief archive and choose 3 different briefs to bring in so we can dissect them and break them down into more manageable or relatable briefs. The briefs that caught my attention were -
100
Fakery
Not just fleurons

After reading through all or the briefs I decided to go with 100 as the basis of my brief. I felt the brief was very broad and didn't really have a specific outcome to it as I struggled initially to come up with any ideas for it. I started by listing all the things that were significant to the number 100 to see if any of these things would spark my imagination.
We were told in the session that we need to re-write our chosen brief to fit with a specific direction we wanted to take our work in, After struggling initially I decided that there wasn't a specified boundary we had to stay in when re-writing the brief so this open up a load of new options for me.
I decided I would push as far as I could in terms of re-writing a brief and so basically just used the tittle as a foundation for my new brief. I wanted to centre the brief around brand so I can up with the idea that I would be creating a new restaurant or bar that had to have some relevance to the number 100, whether that be in terms of number of smells, number of seats or if it were a bar number of beers or wines.

After doing some research and a brainstorm i decided to go with a sushi restaurant as what I would be branding for. The reason I chose to do sushi was because there are many different sushi dishes, over 100 and I find japanese branding really interesting, I think the japanese typography is really strong in terms of branding potential and also it looks really good. The basis around my sushi restaurant would be that we served 100 different sushi dishes and that would be how I would relate it back to the brief.

As it is with branding I first started to look into a logo because once you have this you can apply it to everything across the range. I first looked into words that you could interpret from 100, hecto, cent - per cent, benjamin franklin and so on. I then looked into the japanese work for 100 and how it was written, which was hayaku. I liked this word and stared to play around with it using it in terms of hayaku sushi, looking at it from a branding perspective. The more I looked into the japanese side of this project the more I discovered, I found that there was another word that is 100 that is kind of more along the lines of an older version of the word which is Momo, I felt this worked much better and though it sounded much more like a brand, I think this was a factor from building on the already successful sushi brand yo sushi.
I liked this name because it actually has a literal translation of 100 sushi or 100 dishes with rice. designing a logo wasn't particularly difficult as I didn't really do much development on it because I felt it was relevant and fitted with the branding. The logo was just basically the japanese symbol for 100.

This is similar the the logo I went with ^
I looked into detail into written japanese words and learnt how to write the ones that were relevant to my project. There is a set order to the strokes you do with japanese words so its a very structured written language.

This tally is just for when I was working out the different dishes based around what they contained ie, fish meat shell fish ect..

I started to look at the shop fronts and interiors for sushi restaurants, some of these influenced what I wanted my restaurant to look like in terms of choosing colours and logo styles.

For my research I started to look at some japanese influenced design I tried to get an idea of how they would usually structure their letter forms and type and what colours might typically be used.
As I was making branding for a restaurant I felt I needed to cover pretty much every aspect of my brand with a focus mainly on print rather than web.
I created a list of what I would intend to design -
Logo
Cups
plates
chopsticks
cutlary
menus
bags
takeaway box
uniform
business cards
interior design - bar, seating arrangment
napkins, coasters
advertising - billboards, posters
website
app
artwork for interior walls

I set a big list because I intended to do everything but I knew somethings may not be viable in the remaining time I had left.
