OUGD 603 - 31 DAYS OF LOGO, Logos explained

In the final print of the book I chose not to give any background information on the logos because I wanted the book to just be a collection of logos that I had done day by day. By bringing in background information in it can often take away the simplicity of the original design. I noticed when looking back over the logos I had developed a style from the first to the last, I feel although I got a good balance of logos in the book they all follow a similar style which I feel really ties the book together. This was a project that I really started to enjoy towards the end, creating logos is definitely something I have become much more interested in through this process. I found the logos which I personally preferred came from the companies that I had more of an interest in like the record label or the sport companies for example.

In this post im going to run through all the logos and give a quick analysis on my design decisions and the development I went though to get to that final logo.

This was the first logo I designed for the project, the brief outlined they wanted a logo that could also be used as a print for a t-shirt. The company mainly revolved around beach wear so I felt the logo should reflect these aspects, sun, sea and sand.
This was for an energy company, the image for the logo is a droplet of petrol that has been crystallised, I used this to show strength and reliability, I used yellow because the original image for the logo started off being a simple depiction of fire, my idea grew from that into this but I still wanted to retain the link back to fire as this is the purest form of energy.
This was for a take away service like just eat or hungry house. For this logo I did some research into these already existing companies to see how their logos worked and that they were made up of.

As you can see with the top competitors for this area of business in the UK have similar aspects to their logos. They both use red which I feel is an obvious design decision, the red reflects speed, urgency and ultimately hot food when it arrives, I have replicated a similar colour pallet in my logo. Hungry house have gone down the route of speed and fast delivery times with their logo, using a comet as the image suggests speed, as does the slightly italic typeface they selected. Just eat on the other hand have gone for simplicity using the mouse curser for the A to suggests its a web based service. The name just eat suggests its as simple as that, click, then just eat. Out of the two logos I prefer hungry house aesthetically, but just eat I feel has a clearer message. I tried to utilse my analysis of these already existing companies to build my logo, it was outlined in the brief that they wanted a serving platter at the image for the logo which I tried to give motion by adding lines to it. Red was the obvious choice for colour, I chose black for the text because it could represent the road and the food coming to you. I also used an italicised type face to further suggest movement and speed.
This was for a children's clothing company with signet being a baby swan. I wanted to make something flowing and simple, something that could potentially appeal to children in the form of a cartoony style image.

This was a spar and beauty salon logo. My thought process behind the shell was to do with natural beauty and also the Fibonatchi sequence, I wanted to use a fine type face to represent purity and simplicity, development of this logo was just around the placement of the shell and how it would work in relation to the type
Quite a straight forward brief for a company that sold office supplies. I wanted to use icons to show the sort of things office mall stocked, The simplicity of the deign shows the values of the company
I used a similar identity for this logo for storage containers. I used icons to show the sort of items usually stored but this time I used a box around the logo to suggest security
This logo was for an orthodontists, orthodontists are often used by children to fit braces so the logo had to have some connection to them. In the brief it was outlined the name of the orthodontists 'JP' should be used as part of a face in the logo. I used a line underneath this to show a smile which represents customer satisfaction and a welcoming face to children who can often get nervous from trips to the dentist. Yellow wasn't the colour I selected it was something outlined in the brief. I personally think its a bad choice of colour due to the nature of the company its representing, yellow does represent happiness which I can see as appropriate for this logo but it also might suggest yellow teeth that could put some customers off.
Nest is a company for home ware, Using a birds nest as the basis for this logo I feel suggests security and comfort, I also feel it can represent individuality and hand crafted something that this company wanted to bring the customer.
This logo probably went through the most changes, its for a bb gun or air soft gun company, they originally launched a brief that had quite a clear set of guidelines and a clear vision of what they wanted their logo to look like. This logo is the final outcome of many different versions.

The veriety was mainly down to trying to represent the company correctly. This logo was subject too two different briefs, thats why there are two contrasting logos. Ive used red in this logo because its symbolises danger and power. Ive tried to make the lettering appear solid and as one by giving it a tick black outline. I added other images like the lightning and the scope sights to play around with the asthetic of the logo. I feel overall I represented the military style aspect quite well, I wanted the logo to appear solid and functional and I feel I achieved this. The logo I chose to go with in the end uses the dot on the i as a bb pellet, I tried to show movement with this by adding the red lightning.
This was a very straight forward logo with the company knowing exactly what sort of thing they wanted. The product was whiskey and the door in the logo represents the door of the distillery that has been standing for a long time. This logo tried to represent heritage but wasn't very challenging as most of the design decisions had already been made and outlined in the brief.
I enjoyed making this logo for a gaming cafe, They wanted an 8-bit style typeface so I decided to create my own using the pixel map on illustrator. This was the first time I had used it so it was a new experience for me. There was no colour recommended for the logo so I did a few different variations that used the same colour combinations as the 8-bit games the type face takes inspiration from.

The final logo's colour combination is based on mega man, one of the first and most inflential games of its kind. This was an important game so it justified the colour and gave some significance to the logo.
This is quite a self explanatory logo, the brief outlined they wanted a logo with a similar aesthetic to the already existing surfing companies. When thought about this is a very difficult task to try and replicate very successful companies logos without looking the same. There is only so much you can really do with surfing logos so that it is recognisable to that sport and it is unique and fresh.

These are some examples of existing companies that have a strong logo and identity, waves are the obvious choice to represent a surf logo. For my logo I tried to use waves but in a way that non of the other companies had depicted it, the logo is quite strong so shows brand reliability. I can either be a set of waves or surf breaking on the shore.

Another beach wear or sports wear company thats main focus was on water sports. For the logo they wanted something hand rendered that showed off their humble beginnings. The image for the logo is made up of an F so that is doesn't always have to be accompanied by the text. I wanted to create a clever logo which I feel I have achieved, but not only is it clever it also has relevance to the brand.

This was a simple brief where they just wanted a logo for their sailing club. The boat in the logo is the sort they use in the club, this brief was very well outlined and they knew exactly what they wanted.
Kickstand is a company specialising in parts for bikes, my thought process behind the logo is reliability. Ive tried to show a bike that is going on a journey, trying to reinforce the idea of reliability to the customer. Ive also tried to include different terrane a bike might go on eg flat or mountain. I used the colours to show a sunset because I think it works aesthetically. The thick black lines in the logo are also used to show strength and safety.

These are just a few examples of the development of the logo, I wanted to base it around old school cycling patches to give the company some heritage whilst still keeping it modern and up to date.
This is for a canadian dog food which wanted to brand its self as a rugged healthy version of whats already available to dogs. its something a bit different to all the branding that already exists for dog food which I thought was interesting and fun.
A fishing store wanted a logo they could use and put on t-shirts. This logo went through a few changes mostly concerning colour. I wanted to go for a hand drawn aesthetic with this one because it was a family owned business and I thought it would fit best with this logo style.
The brief for this restaurant has a few ideas that I had a play around with, one of the things mentioned in the brief was that the owner of the restaurant owned and loved pugs thats why it was called homers. My thought process behind this logo was to give the restaurant something unique, a USP which would draw customers in, and I also felt if you were going to called the restaurant after your dog then there should be some clue to that in the logo. Some of the feedback I got from this logo was that it could potentially look like a logo for dog food, I felt this was a fair comment because I can see why someone might say this. On the other hand though used in the correct context it wouldn't look anything like dog food.
This was for a burger restaurant in Hong Kong which had a clear vision for what it wanted its logo to look like, the burger icon was simplified so it could be used as a neon sign for the restaurant.
This is a logo for the Ardent seasonairs. Ardent as a ski resort doesnt have the most picturesque scenery so I used the cable car lift as a basis for the design. Ardent is between two valleys so thats what the mountains represent.  For this logo I took inspiration from old skiing badges and decided to use an art deco orientated typeface to create a simple and strong aesthetic.

Simple classy aesthetic for an up marcket bar in palm springs.
I enjoyed making this logo for a mini gold course. There was nothing really specified in the logo so I decided to copy the masters logo and change it to fit this course. In the masters logo it uses the state of georgia with a hole and flag in it to show the resemblance to a golf course. The images provided with this brief were of the lake that sits in the middle of this mini golf site. I took this and copied the masters logo to make something quite light hearted and fun. The colour selection was down to the fact I felt the lake had to be blue, and I thought the orange was eye catching and worked well together.
This was for a boat storage facility, they wanted something simple and elegant to fit in with where they wanted their business to go. I chose to use negative space to give the illusion the boat is under cover, I also chose not to include water because dry storage is part of this companies policy.
For this brief I wanted to create something functional that also showed craftsmanship, the typeface is used to show reliability and trustfulness. The icon is of wooden flooring shown in 6 different types of wood fitted together in a laminated flooring style, showing the range Madera have to offer.
I wanted this logo to look rugged a relivant to the brand. I just used black and white with a touch of yellow to show the extreme theme. I used mountains that were skiiable rather than depicting a mountain that no one could ski down because this is what what brand is built around. Again a took some inspiration from old school vintage badge design because i liked the simplicity of it.
Quite a straight forward brief for a camping supplier. I really wanted to incorporate aspects of adventure into this logo. The simplified tent in the image shows ease of use and simplicity with the products, it also could represent a camp fire. I chose the colours because it represents a sunset, something that you would often see when camping out, its brings warmth to the brand as well as a calmness.
This is for a high end electrical parts company, this is things like audio equipment ect. For this logo it was outlined that it cant be anything over the top. Ive gone for a simple logo that represent quality, I dint want anything fancy I just wanted to show something that would be well made. the box around the type ties this logo together.
A self explanatory logo for a florists where I've tried to relate art back to floral design. The image I made depicts a flower drawn in quite a pop art style using thick lines and loud colours. The brief outlined that they wanted to move away from the older connotations sometimes related to floral design and bring a new modern touch to it.
This was a logo for an up market hotel that over looked a park. I carefully selected the type face because I feel its very fitting for an upmarket hotel, the lines aren't all the same weight showing attention to detail within the hotel and structure. The image is based around a tree but its also a representation of the high rise building that is the hotel. I chose to make the lines uneven because it suggests a much bigger scale than if the lines were all uniform.

I enjoyed creating this logo for a record company. They wanted a very clean minimal aesthetic to mirror the sort of music they put out. I chose to blur the type to show a spinning motion like a record on a turntable. The yellow just adds a brightness to branding that will make it recognisable and unique
